Regardless of your choice for your kids, martial arts is a nice activity for your children which can develop character a thousand folds.  Below are some thoughts on how to approach this decision.  Parents usually choose martial arts for their kids because of the following things:

Physical Fitness.
Just like with adults, one of the most common reasons for enrolling a child into a martial arts class is fitness.  Aikido can help improve cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, balance, strength and overall energy levels.  It is a very good source of exercise that also teaches life skills.

Life Skills.
These skills include discipline, self control, patience, confidence and courage. The idea with these classes and this motivation is to reinforce what is already being taught at home. Aikido can be a valuable tool for helping to really drive home the points you make at home in a very real way.

Self Defense. The focus of Aikido for children, while still teaching self defense movements, is conflict resolution, personal responsibility and evasion. In that respect, attending a good martial arts class would benefit both the bully by teaching to respect others as, and the bullied, by teaching how to calm a situation or defend oneself if need be.

Behavior skills.
This is also related to life skills.  Aikido can greatly aid in these areas.  Parents are looking for help improving attention span, respect, demeanor and self control.
Aikido is an excellent choice as a martial art for kids.  It is a non-combative Japanese martial art where there is no competitive sparring, but rather a focus on fostering cooperation and harmonization through daily practice.

Although punches and kicks are used to illustrate points, students learn to redirect attacks and aggressive energy without hurting themselves and effectively diffusing a situation without hurting their aggressor as well.  This is of great value for kids because they learn the physical skills necessary for self-defense while learning focus and confidence.

There are at least two black belt instructors that teach each class.  You are more the welcome to stop by and observe class.  Just send us an email or give us a call!
